My Snow Covered Iphone Shoot

I was sitting around today wondering what I should work on and then I looked out the window and saw what appeared to me a blizzard! We haven’t had that must snow this year compared to last and it seems like it always comes in at night. So I quickly grabbed my iphone and headed outside to capture the beauty of fresh fallen snow. I didn’t even bother to grab a hat or coat. Off I went! My kids were outside playing all balled up in their snow pants, hats and scarfs and here’s little old me in sweats and a hoodie outside like a loon taking pictures of the yard. My kids though I was nuts!
It happened to be the perfect time for sunset images as the sun was trying it’s hardest to peak through the clouds. The sky to the west was the sunset sky but the sky to the east was drenched in a beautiful dark blue. It looked amazing to me but to capture this on an iphone is a chore. I knew as long as my exposure was good I could enhance the images afterwards. I brought them into LR and then over to PS for some tweaking and this is what I ended up with. Not bad if I do say so myself. This is actually the first time I ever tried to do a pro edit on iphone images. Indeed, I am impressed with it’s power!
I have heard it time and time again from others but there are still a few that feel like if only they had a 5DMkII or a Nikon700 they could be great photographers. Not true. The camera does not make the photographer. If this were true then owning a top of the line oven would make me a chef and for those of you who know me, know that this is not the case.
For anyone reading this that is pursuing a dream of being a photographer, know this much. It doesn’t matter what equipment you use or how expensive it is. You can be great with the simplest of things. Study the basics. Learn about light. Practice what you read. You can and will make great images with any tool when you understand and can see the light.

Tips on Tuesday: Keep on Shooting! by Jennifer Dworek Photography Erie, PA

This is gonna be a quite one today, nonetheless, an important concept. Sometimes the best pictures are captured when no one thinks they are getting their picture taken. I’ve included 2 images below that were taken on a whim. The one of the mother and her son was taken during a recent shoot. We were all just walking back to another location in the park but I was behind them and I hardly ever miss an opportunity to capture more pictures.  There’s just something about this picture I love. Even though there are no faces in the photo, it is still a very powerful image. You can feel emotion between them.

The other one is Max. I just love this little boy. This was shot between set ups of each of  the children that day. I just love his expression here. Genuine!

So next time your out with your camera, try to be stealthy and sneek a few pics when they aren’t lookin’!

Have fun!

Tips on Tuesday| How to Get Better Pictures From that Camera| Jennifer Dworek Photography

Today’s camera’s simply take amazing quality pictures. But there are a few things you can do to improve you pictures. You do not need to be a professional to get quality results. Something I learn not too long ago is that it’s not the equipment the photographer uses that makes the picture it’s how they choose to use it. I’ve seen some really amazing pictures taken with a cell phone camera.

Todays lesson is going to focus on where to put your subject in the frame. Now remember, these are tips and not Rules! Sometimes steering away from tips is better for certain situations.

  1. Dead center is not always a good thing. Yes, we all do it but putting your subject in the center every time does not make your picture great. Sometimes it works but other times putting them just off center leads the viewer into the frame (see below).
  2. Make sure your subject is looking into the frame and not out (see below).  If you choose to put your subject in the left side of the frame (see below) then make sure she/he is looking into the frame.
  3. Be aware of objects behind your subject. No one likes a tree or a pole growing out of their head!
